George Washington to Visit Washington, NC To Celebrate His 287th Birthday With Party, 5k and Parade

Washington, NC was the first city in America to be named in George Washington’s honor in 1776, yet he’s never visited the town; until now.

The weekend of February 22nd and 23rd thousands will gather in Washington NC to welcome George, drink a toast in his honor and run through the streets donning Washington wigs.

If you live within a day’s drive, or a two week’s ride on the back of a horse, it’s your civic duty to welcome our first president home.  Be there Friday afternoon February 22nd Washington Birthday to cheer him on as he parades down main street, join your friends that evening at his  ticketed 287th rock and roll birthday party (we’re going to party like George), and Saturday morning February 23rd see George cross the icy Potomac river (ooops, the cool Pamlico River) a and start the inaugural Washington 5K and fun run where all registered participants will wear Washington powdered wigs.

In 1791 George Washington visited North Carolina for the first time.  Regretfully his schedule didn’t allow time for him to visit Washington, NC.  “It’s never too late to right a wrong,” said  Bruce Simel market manager of Curtis Media one of the presenters of Washington Week NC.

We’re rolling out the red carpet this February to welcome our first President and town’s namesake,” added Washington Harbor District Alliance Executive Director Margaret Howdy.  If you’ve never been to Washington, or visit only occasionally, this February is a great time to visit the Original Washington, join in the fun, shop our local merchants, and pay your respects to our first President.  You might even get a chance to sit on his knee and tell him what you want for our country.”

Find out details, get tickets to George’s awesome 287th birthday party (tickets are limited) and register for the Washington 5K and Fun run at  Everyone that registers for the race gets a Washington wig and the first 100 that register get a We love Washington NC Shirt.
